Arranging your music with The Godfather

Introduction

So, you want to sort out your music collection, and you've just downloaded the Godfather. If you haven't you should download it right away. This guide is based on the current stable release verion of the Godfather, version 0.58.

The real problem with the Godfather is after you've installed it and run it for the first time. At all looks very confusing and that's because it is. The help file's not up to much either to be honest. So I'm writing this guide to show you how to do it, because I had to go through all the pain of figuring it out for myself (with a little help from the people on the Godfather forum).

The real purpose of this guide is take you, step by step through the Godfather so you can make your music collection sane.

Also, lets get a couple of things straight. This guide was written by Tadhg Pearson. I'm not in any way affiliated with the Godfather or its development, I'm just a user and I didn't write it, I only wrote this guide. Also, this guide is in no way meant to condone the illegal downloading of music, I am writing in the presumption that you are only going to use it for the organisation of files that you legally own. If you do intend to legally download music though, I strongly recommend Audiolunch box who have a fantastic selection of Godfather-compatible DRM-free music for download. Finally, this guide is copyright, but I don't mind if you reproduce it for non-profit use.
Similarly, feel free to link to the guide. And now that the formalities are out of the way, lets get to work.

What the Godfather can do for you.

Let's get this straight, the Godfather's a great tool, but it can't do everything. What it can do is:

  • Tag and rename mp3, ogg, flac, ape and mpc files
  • Help you sort out your music collection en-masse, tagging lots of files the way you want them
  • Tag individual files
  • Create playlists
  • Find duplicates in your music collection
  • Rename and organise files based on their tags or tag files based on their names and the folders they are in
The Godfather doesn't:
  • Tag and rename wma, mp4 or aac files(including iTunes file)
  • Sort out videos. If you can find out something that does this, contact me
  • Appear easy to use the first time you see it
  • Do you a favour on this, the day of my daughter's wedding
