Arranging your music with The Godfather

Online Features

Ever since you've started using the Godfather, those of you blessed with broadband have been itching to use the Godfathers online tab, and you can do some pretty useful stuff with it.

If you know the name of an album, but not the names of the tracks, you can simply browse to its folder in the explorer window, go to Online -> Freedb and put the name of the album in the "Text to search for" box (if it can, the Godfather will do this for you). You can put the artist name in here if you want to as well, it can give you better results. The results themselves appear in the table below, simply double click the correct album from the grid, check the results are OK in the bottom grid and hit "Update" to modify the files tags.

One of the Godfathers best features is the online album-name-guessing feature. If you have an album, but no idea of the track, artist or album name, this will be very useful. Below the FreeDB icon, click on the picture of the magic wand. Now browse to the folder you want to guess in the explorer window. Now choose a server and hit the FreeDB icon and a list of possible albums will appear. Pick the most likely candidate, see that it fits the album in question by hitting the "apply album" button and if it does, hit "Update".

Finally, for the tagging propellerheads amongst us, there's the AMG section. If you want to produce perfect tags, containing commentary on the album, commentary on the artist, lyrics and even photos then this is the section to be in. Note that it doesn't always work in version .58 so you may have to get a newer version from the Godfather's website to make it work. To do so, choose the AMG tab, and hit the house icon if the AMG homepage hasn't already loaded. Select the album radio button, put the name of the album into the search box and hit search. You will then be presented with a list of possible artists for that album, or else sent straight to the album page. If you have to, select the correct album to go to the album page. Now hit "Get Album", hit apply album to make sure that the album matches the one you just searched for, and if it does, hit "Update". Alternatively, you can get the Godfather to save all the album information in a file in the album folder, to do that hit the picture of the disk on the right-hand side toolbar.

Renaming Files

You can also get the Godfather to rename files based on their tags. This is very useful for software like Nero, which extracts CD title information from the filename rather than the files tags. To rename your files to a standard format, go to the rename tab at the top. Tick the "Use Variables" box and enter the format to which you want to rename the files (tokens such as track name can be selected by hitting the down arrow box to the right of the text box). Now browse to the folder of files you want to rename in the explorer window and hit scan. Check that the new file name in the "If renamed" field is OK, and if it is, hit "Rename" to rename the files.

Conclusion

You've reached the end of the guide, but by no means have you reached the end of the Godfather, there's plenty of other stuff you can do with it, including encoding and decoding files, making playlists, manual tagging, lyrics editing. In fact, there are even more options such as powerful filters and replacement matrices that we haven't looked at. Truth be told, we've only got to the tip of the iceberg. By now, however, you should have a good idea of how the main features of the program work, so you can explore the rest in your own time. If you need help, you should check the Help File (just press F1) or The Godfather's Website, most notably the forum, which may have the answers you need.
